Summary

Rumbling Stripes (Japanese: しましまのごろごろ) is the third chapter of the first volume of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. In the Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Manga Scanlations version of the chapter, it is titled "Rumblings of Thunder." Notably, volume 1, chapter 3 is the first chapter in which customers that might not already know Alpha Hatsuseno visit the café. In this chapter, readers learn that Ojisan grows watermelons, and that Alpha can't handle animal protein (even including animal byproducts such as milk and eggs).

Plot

The chapter starts with Alpha asleep in her bed. Once her alarm rings, she begins her wakeup routine by stretching, drinking some water, and then rinsing her mouth with mouthwash. As she passes her attic stairs, she thinks it might be a good way to greet the day by going up to open the attic shutters. As she tries to do so however, she finds that the attic shutters are stuck shut, and she accidentally breaks one of the doors off as she kicks it open.

As Alpha repairs her shutters, she hears Ojisan's tractor approaching her café with a trailer full of watermelon. Ojisan explains that he is thankful for her supervision of Takahiro, and offers her watermelon in exchange. Alpha, who loves watermelon, excitedly rushes down, and sticks out her hands to receive one before Ojisan exclaims that the entire trailer is for her. Alpha and Ojisan talk about how bountiful the harvest was this year, and about how Ojisan has been spending the entire day trying to give watermelon away to anyone who might want some.

Alpha ends up with 12 watermelon as Ojisan drives off with his trailer still full. Unsure of what to do with them, she brings them into the café, and tries to pretty them up for customers by putting bows on them. Just as she finishes, two customers enter and giggle at the watermelons. As Alpha serves them, she tries to get them to take a melon, but the customers point out their truck already full of watermelons just outside the café. To end the chapter, Ojisan is seen sitting in front of his gas station, with a shelf full of watermelons. Sitting at a table, Alpha glances over at her own bow-tied watermelons, and chuckles at herself.
